Dawn on the Lake

Your adventure begins at 5:30 AM, though we’re flexible to suit your needs—early risers get the best bites! After a quick Fisherman’s Breakfast or full house feast at our comfortable lakeside lodge, you’ll board one of our top-notch boats: either a 17ft Kosi Cat or a 15ft skiff, both equipped with Lowrance fish finders to pinpoint prime fishing spots. With just four guests per boat, you’ll enjoy a personalized experience as your guide, boasting over 10 years of guiding experience and unmatched knowledge of Cahora Bassa, navigates the lake’s shimmering expanse.

As the boat glides across the water, the lake comes alive with the calls of fish eagles and the distant grunts of hippos. You’ll fish your way along the lake, targeting guide-selected hotspots like river inlets teeming with tigerfish or deep channels hiding monster vundu. Whether you bring your own tackle or opt for our provided equipment (available for an additional fee), your guide will ensure you’re rigged for success—think spinners or live bait for tigerfish up to 13kg, or worms for bream up to 4kg. The morning’s 7-hour session is a whirlwind of casting, reeling, and battling fish, with complimentary beverages on board to keep you refreshed. The thrill of a tigerfish’s explosive strike or a vundu’s powerful tug will have your heart racing, all set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Lake Cahora Bassa’s vast, untamed beauty.

Fishing with Experts

What sets Ragnar Safaris apart is our intricate knowledge of Lake Cahora Bassa, honed by our guides’ decade-plus experience. They don’t just take you fishing—they maximize your chances of landing the catch of a lifetime. Want to target a leaping tigerfish with lures? A vundu with live bait? Or perhaps a cornish jack with bait? Our guides tailor the day to your preferences, choosing from our top species: tigerfish, vundu , sharptooth catfish, tilapia, and Cornish jack. With 100 liters of fuel allocated per boat daily, we cover the lake’s best spots, from shallow bays to submerged structures, ensuring no hotspot goes unexplored.

Our commitment to catch-and-release fishing preserves the lake’s fishery for future generations, while our partnership with a lure manufacturer fine-tunes lures specifically for Cahora Bassa’s conditions—think custom spoons that tigerfish can’t resist. Safety is paramount in this crocodile-filled lake, with our boats equipped with GPS, life jackets, and guides trained in emergency response. Whether you’re a seasoned angler perfecting your spinner technique or a beginner learning to cast, our guides provide hands-on coaching, making every moment on the water productive and exhilarating. As our guests have noted, the guides’ expertise turns a fishing trip into “an experience of a lifetime.”

Around midday, when Cahora Bassa’s heat peaks, you’ll pause for a lakeside lunch or enjoy boat lunch packs, savouring light, fresh flavors while swapping stories of the morning’s catches. Then, it’s back to fishing for a 4 to 5 hour afternoon session, continuing to target tiger fish around structure, chasing vundu in deep waters or bream in calmer shallows. The flexibility to target your dream species, combined with our guides’ unmatched lake knowledge, ensures every cast counts.

Evening Relaxation

As the sun dips low, casting golden hues across Lake Cahora Bassa, your boat returns to the lakeside lodge, arriving amid one of the lake’s breathtaking sunsets. The air hums with hippo grunts and fish eagle cries, a reminder of this wild paradise’s magic. For those still craving action, the adventure doesn’t end at dusk. You can fish from the lodge’s shore for vundu , sharptooth catfish, or cornish jack, casting bait into the shallows as the stars emerge. Feeling adventurous? Join a night fishing session around a Kapenta rig, where tiger fish hunt under the glow of lights, offering a thrilling chance to hook these predators after dark

If relaxation calls, cool off with a swim in the lodge’s pool, rinse off in your en-suite shower, or unwind at the bar with a cold drink, sharing tales of the day’s catches. The lodge’s comfortable accommodations, with stunning lake views, provide a cozy retreat. Dinner is a highlight, featuring a 2-course meal served under a canopy of stars. Our work with the local community to remove “ghost nets” from the lake adds a feel-good layer, knowing your trip supports conservation. After an early night to recharge, you’ll drift off dreaming of tomorrow’s battles, ready for another day on Cahora Bassa.
